Identity and purity are assessed mainly by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, often paired with mass spectrometry to confirm the expected mass. Copper content is measured separately by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy, because the peptide assay alone does not establish the metal-to-peptide ratio. Visible spectroscopy provides a rapid check on complex integrity through the absorption band in the visible region. Agreement between the peptide assay and the copper assay is the practical test of whether a sample is the intended complex rather than a mixture.
Aqueous solutions of GHK-Cu are less stable than the dry powder. The peptide backbone is vulnerable to hydrolysis at extreme pH, and copper can be stripped from the complex by strong chelating agents such as EDTA or citrate. Oxidising agents and high concentrations of ascorbic acid can reduce copper(II) and change the complex, which is one reason formulators often keep such ingredients in separate phases. How quickly these changes occur under real storage conditions depends on pH, buffer, temperature and packaging, and quantitative data on the subject are limited.
Research interest in GHK-Cu centers on its ability to deliver copper and to influence cellular processes in laboratory models. In cell culture and animal studies, the complex has been linked to collagen synthesis, antioxidant enzyme activity, and expression of genes associated with tissue remodeling. These effects are not equivalent to proven clinical outcomes. The mechanisms proposed include copper transfer to cuproenzymes, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interactions with extracellular matrix components. How much of the observed activity depends on intact GHK-Cu versus free copper or free peptide is not fully resolved.
The compound entered scientific literature in the 1970s, when plasma factors with copper-binding activity were isolated and characterized. Later work expanded into wound healing, skin biology, and cosmetic formulation, where copper tripeptide-1 became a recognized ingredient name. Most published studies remain preclinical or small-scale, and findings are often reported in specialized dermatology or peptide journals. Regulatory treatment varies: some jurisdictions allow it as a cosmetic ingredient, while research-grade material is sold for laboratory use. Questions about optimal delivery, target tissues, and long-term effects continue to be investigated rather than settled.

Identity and purity are normally checked by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often coupled to mass spectrometry. The peptide absorbs in the ultraviolet region, and the copper complex also shows a broad visible absorption band that can be followed spectroscopically. Copper content is measured separately, for example by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy, because the peptide assay alone does not confirm how much metal is bound. Purity figures therefore need a stated basis: peptide peak area, copper content, or both.
Aqueous GHK-Cu solutions are less stable than the dry powder. Light, dissolved oxygen and elevated temperature all accelerate loss of the intact complex, and the main observable changes are fading of the blue colour and the appearance of peptide fragments. Acidic conditions protonate the histidine imidazole and weaken copper binding, while strongly alkaline conditions promote hydrolysis of the peptide backbone. Because several degradation routes operate at once, a single shelf-life figure does not describe all storage conditions.
Handling practices for the solid material emphasise low temperature and dryness. The lyophilised or powdered form is typically kept at refrigerator or freezer temperatures together with a desiccant. Working solutions are often prepared fresh, because repeated freeze-thaw cycles and extended storage may alter the complex. Glass or inert plastic containers are preferred over materials that could leach metal ions into the preparation. Such practices follow general peptide conventions rather than substance-specific regulations.
Analytical verification commonly relies on high-performance liquid chromatography for purity assessment and mass spectrometry for identity confirmation. Spectroscopic methods such as UV-visible absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance can probe the metal centre itself, since the d9 configuration of copper(II) produces characteristic signals. Elemental analysis or plasma-based techniques quantify copper content. Because each method reports a different aspect of the same sample, purity figures are most meaningful when the technique and its detection wavelength are stated alongside the value.
Material described in research and cosmetic supply chains is typically a synthetic peptide supplied as a lyophilized powder. Purity is commonly reported through chromatographic separation, often at 95 percent or higher, while copper content is confirmed by separate elemental analysis. Batch variation in color and solubility can reflect residual counter-ions, moisture, or partial oxidation of the peptide. Because the complex is not a single regulatory entity, specifications differ between suppliers and are not standardized internationally.
GHK-Cu is a coordination complex formed between the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and a copper(II) ion. The peptide binds copper through its histidine imidazole nitrogen, its terminal amino group, and a deprotonated amide nitrogen, creating a stable chelate ring. The resulting complex carries a distinctive blue to blue-violet color, which arises from copper d-d electronic transitions. In the solid state it is usually handled as a powder, while in solution the complex can dissociate and re-form depending on pH and competing ligands. The name copper tripeptide-1 is widely used in ingredient listings.
Copper content is measured separately, since a peptide assay alone does not report the metal-to-peptide ratio. Elemental techniques such as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy quantify copper after acid digestion of the sample. The result is compared with the theoretical value for a one-to-one complex, and a shortfall indicates free peptide or partial dissociation. Suppliers differ in how they state purity, as some quote peptide content and others quote the whole complex. A defined stoichiometry therefore requires both a peptide assay and a copper assay.
Solid GHK-Cu is usually supplied as a lyophilized powder and is kept cold and dry. Moisture, light, and repeated temperature cycling shorten its useful life in the laboratory. In aqueous solution the complex undergoes slow hydrolysis of the peptide backbone and gradual loss of coordinated copper. Buffers containing strong chelators, such as EDTA, compete for the metal and strip it from the peptide. Working solutions are therefore prepared shortly before use, and leftover liquid is not returned to the stock container.
Enslavement in the Americas existed before European arrival and was used for numerous reasons. Slavery in Mexico can be traced back to the Aztecs. Other Amerindians, such as the Inca of the Andes, the Tupinambá of Brazil, the Creek of Georgia, and the Comanche of Texas, also practiced slavery. Slavery in Canada was practiced by First Nations and by European settlers. Slave-owning people of what became Canada were, for example, the fishing societies, such as the Yurok, that lived along the Pacific coast from Alaska to California, on what is sometimes described as the Pacific or Northern Northwest Coast. Some of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, such as the Haida and Tlingit, were traditionally known as fierce warriors and slave-traders, raiding as far as California. Slavery was hereditary, the slaves being prisoners of war and their descendants were slaves. Some nations in British Columbia continued to segregate and ostracize the descendants of slaves as late as the 1970s.

These models state that each IR monomer possesses 2 insulin binding sites; site 1, which binds to the 'classical' binding surface of insulin: consisting of L1 plus αCT domains and site 2, consisting of loops at the junction of FnIII-1 and FnIII-2 predicted to bind to the 'novel' hexamer face binding site of insulin. As each monomer contributing to the IR ectodomain exhibits 3D 'mirrored' complementarity, N-terminal site 1 of one monomer ultimately faces C-terminal site 2 of the second monomer, where this is also true for each monomers mirrored complement (the opposite side of the ectodomain structure). Current literature distinguishes the complement binding sites by designating the second monomer's site 1 and site 2 nomenclature as either site 3 and site 4 or as site 1' and site 2' respectively. As such, these models state that each IR may bind to an insulin molecule (which has two binding surfaces) via 4 locations, being site 1, 2, (3/1') or (4/2'). As each site 1 proximally faces site 2, upon insulin binding to a specific site, 'crosslinking' via ligand between monomers is predicted to occur (i.e. as [monomer 1 Site 1 - Insulin - monomer 2 Site (4/2')] or as [monomer 1 Site 2 - Insulin - monomer 2 site (3/1')]). In accordance with current mathematical modelling of IR-insulin kinetics, there are two important consequences to the events of insulin crosslinking; 1. that by the aforementioned observation of negative cooperation between IR and its ligand that subsequent binding of ligand to the IR is reduced and 2.

The journey across the United States began on 15 July 1988. On the journey he slept in bushes beneath the World Trade Center, camped outside Kennedy Airport in a tent, then headed west. On Staten Island he collapsed from heat exhaustion at 105 degrees Fahrenheit. In Utah the temperatures went down to minus 30 Fahrenheit. Carrying a tent and a backpack, with no backup, he walked alone to Niagara Falls, through Ontario in Canada, to Detroit, between the Great Lakes, across the Great Plains, through the Rockies in winter, to Yellowstone National Park, then south to the Grand Canyon, on to Las Vegas, through Death Valley and then snowshoed over the Sierras to reach San Francisco. In Death Valley, down to his last $13, Skinner found $200 in the desert, and he had $1 left when he crossed the Sierras to reach Yosemite Valley. The total distance he walked from New York City to San Francisco, was 4,952 miles (7,969 km). On the journey he visited 70 hospices and appeared on television, radio and in newspapers to encourage support for hospices across the U.S. and Canada. The mayor of San Francisco, Art Agnos, proclaimed 21 March 1989, "Colin Skinner Day," in recognition of the attention he brought to the work of hospices with AIDS patients in the city. Returning to Britain after this walk, he obtained a job as a research assistant in Chemical Pathology at the Middlesex Hospital and went on to obtain a PhD in Molecular Biology at University College London.
Historically, Romanian researchers and inventors have made notable contributions to several fields. In the history of flight, Traian Vuia built the first aeroplane to take off under its own power and Aurel Vlaicu built and flew some of the earliest successful aircraft, while Henri Coandă discovered the Coandă effect of fluidics. Victor Babeș discovered more than 50 types of bacteria; biologist Nicolae Paulescu developed an extract of the pancreas and showed that it lowers blood sugar in diabetic dogs, thus being significant in the history of insulin; while Emil Palade received the Nobel Prize for his contributions to cell biology. Lazăr Edeleanu was the first chemist to synthesise amphetamine, and he also invented the procedure of separating valuable petroleum components with selective solvents. During the 1990s and 2000s, the development of research was hampered by several factors, including corruption, low funding, and a considerable brain drain. In recent years, Romania has ranked the lowest or second-lowest in the EU by research and development spending as a percentage of GDP, standing at roughly 0.5% in 2016 and 2017, substantially below the EU average of just over 2%. The country joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2011, and CERN in 2016. In 2018, however, Romania lost its voting rights in the ESA due to a failure to pay €56.8 million in membership contributions to the agency. In the early 2010s, the situation for science in Romania was characterised as "rapidly improving" albeit from a low base.
The four substrates of this enzyme are propylene, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), oxygen, and a proton. Its products are propylene oxide, oxidised NAD+, and water. This enzyme is an oxidoreductase, acting on paired donors, with molecular oxygen as oxidant and incorporating one of its atoms. The systematic name of this enzyme class is alkene,NADH:oxygen oxidoreductase. This enzyme is also called alkene epoxygenase. It contains a Rieske type of ferredoxin.
=== Serotonin === In the brain, serotonin is a neurotransmitter and regulates arousal, behavior, sleep, and mood, among other things. During prolonged exercise where central nervous system fatigue is present, serotonin levels in the brain are higher than normal physiological conditions; these higher levels can increase perceptions of effort and peripheral muscle fatigue. The increased synthesis of brain serotonin occurs because of a higher proportion of tryptophan, the serotonin precursor, in the blood and which results in larger amounts of tryptophan crossing the blood–brain barrier. An important factor of serotonin synthesis is the transport mechanism of tryptophan across the blood–brain barrier. The transport mechanism for tryptophan is shared with the branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), leucine, isoleucine, and valine. During extended exercise, BCAAs are consumed for skeletal muscle contraction, allowing for greater transport of tryptophan across the blood–brain barrier. None of the components of the serotonin synthesis reaction are saturated under normal physiological conditions, allowing for the increased production of the neurotransmitter. However the failure of BCAAs to decrease time to fatigue consistently limit this hypothesis. This may be due to a counter-acting mechanism: BCAAs also limit the uptake of tyrosine, another aromatic amino acid, like tryptophan. Tyrosine is a precursor to catecholamine, which enhances performance drive.
In addition to actions at receptors, Semax, as well as a related peptide drug, Selank, have been found to inhibit enzymes involved in the degradation of enkephalins and other endogenous regulatory peptides (IC50 = 10 μM), though the clinical significance of this property is uncertain. As a peptide, Semax has poor oral bioavailability and hence is administered parenterally as a nasal spray or subcutaneous injection.

== Challenges == The space environment is expected to be beneficial for production of a variety of products assuming the obstacles to it can be overcome. The most significant cost is overcoming the energy hurdle for boosting materials into orbit. Once this barrier is significantly reduced in cost per kilogram, the entry price for space manufacturing can make it much more attractive to entrepreneurs. After the heavy capitalization costs of assembling the mining and manufacturing facilities are paid, the production will need to be economically profitable in order to become self-sustaining and beneficial to society. The economic requirements of space manufacturing imply a need to collect the requisite raw materials at a minimum energy cost. The cost of space transport is directly related to the delta-v, or change in velocity required to move from the mining sites to the manufacturing plants. Bringing material to Earth orbit from bodies such as Near-Earth asteroids, Phobos, Deimos or the lunar surface requires far less delta-v than launching from Earth itself, despite the greater distances involved. This makes these places economically attractive as sources of raw materials.
=== Certification of 2020 presidential election === On January 6, 2021, Wittman was one of the 147 Republican members of the U.S. Congress who objected to certifying the 2020 presidential election. He voted against certifying Pennsylvania's electors after a day of violence as the U.S. Capitol was breached by Trump supporters who disrupted proceedings, despite no clear evidence of widespread voter fraud.
==== Egypt ==== Potassium alum was also known to the Ancient Egyptians, who obtained it from evaporites in the Western desert and reportedly used it as early as 1500 BCE to reduce the visible cloudiness (turbidity) in the water.
==== United States ==== In the United States, mescaline was made illegal in 1970 by the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act, categorized as a Schedule I hallucinogen. The drug is prohibited internationally by the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Mescaline is legal only for certain religious groups (such as the Native American Church by the American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978) and in scientific and medical research. In 1990, the Supreme Court ruled that the state of Oregon could ban the use of mescaline in Native American religious ceremonies. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) in 1993 allowed the use of peyote in religious ceremony, but in 1997, the Supreme Court ruled that the RFRA is unconstitutional when applied against states. Many states, including the state of Utah, have legalized peyote usage with "sincere religious intent", or within a religious organization, regardless of race. Synthetic mescaline, but not mescaline derived from cacti, was officially decriminalized in the state of Colorado by ballot measure Proposition 122 in November 2022. While mescaline-containing cacti of the genus Echinopsis are technically controlled substances under the Controlled Substances Act, they are commonly sold publicly as ornamental plants.

Dry powder is best kept cold, dark and sealed, typically at -20 °C for long-term storage or 2 to 8 °C for material in regular use. Vials should be warmed to room temperature before opening to prevent moisture condensing on the contents. Aqueous stock solutions degrade faster and are usually prepared fresh.
The colour comes from electronic transitions between the copper ion and the surrounding peptide nitrogen atoms. The resulting absorption sits in the visible region, giving the solid and its solutions a blue to violet appearance. Loss of colour can indicate that the copper has dissociated from the peptide.
Chromatography establishes the identity and purity of the peptide, while elemental analysis establishes the copper content. The two results should agree with a one-to-one ratio. Visible spectroscopy adds a quick check that the complex itself is intact.
GHK-Cu is a complex of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine with copper(II). The peptide binds copper through its histidine residue and neighboring amide nitrogens, forming a stable coordination compound. It is studied as a research chemical and used in some cosmetic formulations.
